The New Zealand Web Standards 2.0 were released in March 2009 and replace the previous version, the New Zealand Government Web Standards 1.0 (below).  See Meeting the standards for more information.

The Recommendation

Recommendation 19.1.1 Scope of collecting tracking data. The collection of data about a user client and user activity on a web site should only be for creating anonymous web site usage statistics.

Guide to this recommendation

Client data includes details of browser software, operating system, and other HTTP header information such as IP address, and web site referrer. User activity includes page access and user navigation between pages in a web site.

Rationale for this recommendation

Web site users express high levels of concern about the collection of information about their activities on the Internet.

This standard limits the purpose and use of this data, and can protect the privacy of the individual user.
