Guide to the Privacy statement standard
Overview
The Privacy statement standard reflects a combination of the requirements of the Privacy Act 1993 and other matters which ought to be considered in the rubric of creating privacy statements which bolster public trust and confidence in public websites and services.
If an agency wishes, its website can supplement privacy information contained within a privacy statement with additional targeted privacy messages in specific contexts, e.g., where the web site collects information by means of a form.
The agency is expected to have a principal privacy statement, as content or a link to a dedicated privacy page, within "About this Site".
Rationale
Giving notice to web site visitors about how your agency collects and uses personal information is good practice and assists your agency in both complying with the Privacy Act 1993 and engendering public trust and confidence in those who use the agency’s website.
Examples
Further information on drafting privacy statements, including the concept of "layered privacy notices", can be found on the Office of the Privacy Commissioner’s website.
